A favorite of locals and tourists, the longstanding Istanbul sweetshop, known for introducing profiteroles to Turkey, did not survive to celebrate another new year after local court decided to transfer the building that houses it to another firm for renovational purposes.

İnci Patisserie has been known for its profiterole since it was founded in 1944 by Lucas Zigoridis. It is been said that Mr. Zigoridis invented profiterole while trying to find a different taste to compete with other patisseries. No matter who invented profiterole, İnci is the best spot to enjoy profiterole.
It is not a fancy place, the interior design still belongs to the 50′s. There are few tables and a stand inside but most people enjoy profiterole on foot. But hurry up, this legendary patisserie could soon be forced to close as the building that houses İnci has been leased to a construction company which wants to turn the historic building into a shopping mall.

A terrible year to be forgotten is almost done. It’s time to pack my luggage, Istanbul calling.
With some numbers in 2011, I got twice freshly pressed on WordPress.com. In May with road companions and in September with textured. So this two posts entered the top 5 of my annual post stats. As I was bloggin in Turkish before, most of the search terms are still the same. People arrive to this blog by searching “flea market”. I am frequent visitor to the flea market in search for expired films, super8 movies and also toy-cameras. Actually today I made my last visit for this year and returned home with two b/w films and super8 travel movies from Italy and Spain (dated late 50′s).
This year the blog extended more readers and more comments to the posts were made. I have to mention Julia with her daily comments.
It is still early to say welcome to 2012 but just in case I will not have time in the coming days I wish you happy new year!

17 Nisan’da Emek Sineması’nı geri alıyoruz!
Duymayan kalmadı: Emek Sineması iki yıldır kapalı. Sinemanın da içerisinde bulunduğu ada yıkılıp yerine tıpkı sinemanın karşısındaki Demirören AVM gibi, dışı ‘tarihi eser’ çakması içi yaldır yaldır bir AVM yapılacak. Emek’ten geri kalanlar ise AVM’nin en üst katına defnedilecek.Emek Sineması, kentsel yenileme safsatası adı altında, İstanbul’u alışveriş, kültür ve kongre merkezi ve bol yıldızlı otel ile donatarak, kamuya ait ne varsa özelleştirerek pazarlanabilir hale getirme projesinin ne ilk ne de son kurbanı. İstanbul’un AVM’ler, plazalar ve rezidanslarla değiştirilen siluetiyle sadece evlerimizi, okullarımızı, sokaklarımızı, sinemalarımızı değil bireysel ve kolektif hafızamızı da kaybediyoruz yavaş yavaş…
Fakat bizler, İstiklal Caddesi’nde heyula gibi yükselen Demirören AVM’nin devasa gölgesiyle bile yok edemeyeceği hafızamızda hâlâ Saray Sineması’nı taşıyoruz, unutmuyoruz! Emek Sineması’nda seyrettiğimiz ilk film kadar 1987′de yine burada gerçekleştirilen 1 Mayıs kutlamasını da hatırlıyoruz. Hatırladığımız için bugüne sahip çıkıyoruz.
Israr ediyoruz, “sadece Emek değil, bütün İstanbul bizim!” diyoruz.
Dört aydır bir avuç sözüm ona tarafsız bilirkişi tarafından yazılacak ve Emek Sineması’nın kaderini belirleyecek raporu bekliyoruz. Bizler artık ellerimizden alınan mahalleleri ve kamu alanlarını “kaderlerine” terk etmek yerine onları kamu yararı adına geri alma zamanının geldiğini düşünüyoruz.
Bilenler bilmeyenlere söylesin: haksız ve hukuksuz bir şekilde sermayeye devredilen Emek Sineması ve Cercle D’Orient binası Sosyal Güvenlik Kurumu’na, yani kamuya, yani bizlere aittir ve şüphesiz ki bu alan üzerindeki her türlü kullanım hakkı kamunundur ve kolektiftir. Nazarımızda meşru ve esas olan Beyoğlu Belediye Başkanı, Kültür ve Turizm Bakanı, Yenileme Kurulu Üyeleri ve Kamer İnşaaat gibi şirketlerin çıkarları değil, kamunun yararı ve kararıdır. Ticarileştirilen sanatsal ve kültürel üretime, özelleştirilen kamusal alanlara karşı kamusal müştereklere sahip çıkmanın gerekliliğine inanıyoruz. Bu nedenle, alenen ilan ediyoruz, iktidarın keyfi hukuksuzluğuna karşı Emek Sineması’nı geri alıyoruz!
Aksi takdirde, Emek Sineması, geçen seneki İstanbul Film Festivali kapanışında, bu sene de açılışında gördüğümüz üzere, iktidarın ve sermayenin yağmaladığı, ezip geçtiği bütün kültürel, toplumsal ve tarihi değerlerin başına geldiği gibi bir nostalji mekanı olmaktan öteye geçemeyecektir. Biz bu gelip geçici duygulanmalara, ah vah çekmelere inanmıyoruz. Emek Sineması, dile getirildiği gibi bir değerse ona henüz geç olmadan sahip çıkmak zorundayız.
Bu düşünce ve motivasyonla herkesi 30. İstanbul Film Festivali’nde ulusal yarışmaya katılması “uygun görülen” ilk belgesel olan ve İstanbul’un talan edilme sürecini anlatan Ekümenopolis filmini hep beraber Emek Sineması perdesinde izlemek için 17 Nisan Pazar günü saat 18:30′da Taksim Tramvay Durağı’nda buluşarak Yeşilçam Sokak’a beraber yürümeye ve Emek Sineması’nı kitlesel bir şekilde geri almaya davet ediyoruz.
Bu vesileyle bütün sinemacılara sesleniyoruz: Gelin siz de filminizi 17 Nisan’da Emek Sineması’nda gösterin!
