On Saturday morning King Albert II, Queen Paola and the rest of the royal family attended the Te Deum in honour of Belgium’s national day at Brussels cathedral. In the past, the steps up to the cathedral have witnessed some remarkable scenes, such as a Belgian Prime Minister that mistook the French national anthem for the Belgian national anthem The Brabançonne”.
However this morning, it was the turn of the King to experience an embarrassing incident outside the cathedral.

King Albert II’s ceremonial sword became stuck in a manhole cover.

Luckily for the king, members of his entourage were able to get the sword loose and the Belgian monarch was able to join the rest of the royal family, politicians and other VIPs inside the cathedral for the Te Deum led by the Belgian primate Archbishop Léonard.
